Introduction: Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for rice growth and development, contributing to more than 300 enzyme structure and function. Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for rice growth and development, contributing to more than 300 enzyme structure and function. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of foliar application of glycine chelated zinc on yield, yield components, grain quality traits, and zinc distribution in the aerial parts of rice plants at booting and grain filling stages.
Materials and Methods: This experiment was carried out as factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications in 2025 cropping year. The experimental factors were foliar application of glycine chelated zinc at three levels including control (spraying with distilled water) and foliar spraying of 2.5 and 5 ppm glycine chelated zinc at booting and grain filling stages, and two rice varieties, Hashemi and Shiroodi (local improved varieties, respectively). The studied traits included grain yield, biomass, 1000-grain weight, as well as grain protein, zinc, and nitrogen content, which were measured at different stages. Analysis of variance were performed using SAS software and comparison of means were conducted using LSD test at 5% probability level.
Results and Discussion: The results showed that foliar application of glycine chelated zinc at a concentration of 5 ppm produced the highest 1000-grain weight (30.7 and 29 g, respectively) and grain yield (5903 and 5536 kg/ha, respectively) in Shiroodi and Hashemi varieties. This treatment increased the panicle zinc content (2.9 and 2.3 times, respectively) and the zinc and grain protein content (26.9 and 11.7 percent, respectively) compared to the control in Hashemi and Shiroodi varieties. Overall, foliar application of glycine chelated zinc improved vegetative traits, grain yield and yield components, as well as the nutritional quality by increasing zinc absorption and transport in the plant, and can be used as an effective strategy to increase the quantitative and qualitative production of rice.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this experiment, foliar application of glycine chelated zinc at a concentration of 5 ppm improved grain yield and nutritional quality of rice, and is therefore recommended as an effective solution for zinc nutrition management in rice fields.
